DRDO needs smart fuses for air-delivered bombs

By SP's Special Correspondent August 19, 2014

The DRDO's Pune-based armament laboratory has invited expression of interest from Indian development partners or consortia to design, developm and supply a highly reliable electromechanical I electronic impact delay fuze for air-dropped penetrating bombs. "The requirement of this system would be quite high, once developed successfully and accepted by the user. Any enterprise having infrastructure, adequate resources and integrated management may find this task challenging as firm will be recognized as established manufacturer for the store on annual basis after successful development of product. On successful completion of development and user acceptance, initial bulk order will be placed on the development partner," says DRDO in its EOI. The impact delay fuze is an electromechanical fusing system to detonate the bomb either on impact or programmed impact delay modes. The DRDO has stipulated that the fuzing system needs to be compatible with general purpose bombs similar to MK-80 series with high explosive fillings and penetration bombs from the 80 to 1000 kg class, similar to BLU109, CBEMS 250 and guided bombs such as Paveway, AASM, JDAM and GBU-39.
