MIDHANI Scouts Govt support for new steel hub

November 24, 2014: Keeping China's growing prowess and massive appetite for steel in mind, Defence PSU Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (Midhani) has approached the MoD's Department of Defence Production to seek investment of Rs 500 crore for a greenfield advanced steel forge that will offset the huge consumption pressure China exerts in the region. Sources say the 17,000 ton capacity steel forge proposal is currently being studied at the MoD level. Midhani has proposed that the facility be set up in coastal Andhra Pradesh in order to have easy access to ports for transportation of materials. To meet growing needs of carbon fibre, especially in the strategic and aerospace sectors, Midhani has also entered into a partnership with the National Aerospace Lab (NAL) in Bengaluru for joint production that can be scaled up to meet emergent requirements. With Midhani's Rs 200 crore capacity expansion programme virtually complete (it is likely to be inaugurated and ready for production by mid-2015), fresh capacities are finally becoming available for the corporation to begin thinking of an export plan that had been detailed earlier this year. Its current projects include aeronautical grade titanium, ultra super-critical alloys and high grade steels. While Midhani has not revealed what its export catalogue will contain, it is likely to support civilian aerospace, space and indigenous military efforts in other countries.
