Karnataka HC orders HAL workers to end strike
9-day stir over pay hike demand hits services to Indian armed forces
The High Court of Karnataka in an interim order on October 22 directed employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to call off their nine-day-old strike in Bengaluru.
An estimated 20,000 HAL employees across the country are on strike since October 14 demanding higher wages and allowances. Talks had broken down with the HAL management, which termed the strike "illegal". The strike in the public sector undertaking which functions under the Ministry of Defence has paralysed all production and maintenance work of India's sole aircraft manufacturer, of which the Indian armed forces are the principal customers.
"The High Court of Karnataka has passed an interim order today restraining the Hindustan Aeronautics Employees Association (HAEA), its office bearers/workmen from continuing their ongoing strike including go-slow, work to rule or any form of agitation or disrupting day-to-day activities of HAL and its offices in Bengaluru," according to a press statement released by HAL.
"It is now obligatory for the HAEA to immediately call-off the strike and resume the work, failing which it would amount to contempt of the court," the statement added.
HAL management had filed a writ petition in the High Court of Karnataka seeking a direction to the workers union to call off their strike and resume work.
